At a gathering in the State Dining room, Obama told the girls that mentoring has always been important to her, and that she wanted to use her platform as first lady to "expand the mentoring role."

Second Lady Jill Biden, White House advisor Valerie Jarrett, Social Secretary Desiree Rogers, and several members of the first lady's staff and the senior staff in the West Wing will serve as mentors.

In the coming months, Obama will take that program on the road, aides said. The West Wing also will launch a mentoring and leadership program for high school boys that the president will participate in, aides said.

Nice.

J. Crew Has Had a VERY Good Year (Thanks to Michelle O?)

Michelle O's fondness of J. Crew is well documented by now. She likes it for herself. She likes it for her girls. So it's no surprise that J. Crew has had a stellar year this year, and Jenna Lyons, J. Crews creative director is being rewarded as such:

Jenna Lyons , creative director of J.Crew Group Inc., received a special bonus of $1 million this week, according to a filing made with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ms. Lyons's design aesthetic has been credited for the recent success of the New York clothing company. Stronger-than-expected sales in October prompted J. Crew last week to nearly double its outlook for fiscal third-quarter earnings to between 54 and 59 cents a share, up from 30 to 33 cents a share. J. Crew's casual styles-embellished T-shirts, frilly blouses and chunky jewelry-have been widely copied in the mall apparel space.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that FLOTUS had something to do with this :)

POTUS & FLOTUS: Open up the White House for Trick or Treating...

First lady Michelle Obama (dressed as Catwoman!) greeted parents, trick-or-treaters and local school children at the north portico of the White House during a Halloween celebration on October 31, 2009 in Washington, DC. The Obamas are celebrating their first Halloween in the White House by inviting students and military families over for the holiday.

The President chose to come as...himself :)

POTUS, FLOTUS – as Cat Woman! – first grandma Marian Robinson and some 2,000 children and a few hundred adults are trick-or-treating at the White House for Halloween. Pool reports Obama dressed in casual slacks, checked shirt and a black sweater, while FLOTUS got into the spirit of things with an orange-and-black leopard-type top and cat ears, black eye shadow, her hair in a bun and lots of gold bracelets on one arm. POTUS deemed FLOTUS to be “a very nice-looking Cat Woman."

Michelle O. Covers Glamour Magazine's Annual Women's Issue...

Glamour is honoring First Lady Michelle Obama with a Special Recognition award for her commitment to mentoring young women. (She also appears on our cover--the first time in Glamour’s 70-year history that a First Lady has ever done so.) You simply cannot talk about 2009 without talking about Mrs. Obama: and no, I don’t mean her status as a style icon (richly deserved though it may be). Just nine months into her job, our nation’s first African-American First Lady has thrown open the doors of the White House to local children and families, determined to show young people that, in her words, “there’s no magic to being here”--that with hard work, any one of us can rise to greatness. And at Glamour, we love that she’s particularly set on expanding young women’s horizons: The First Lady is establishing mentor relationships between top women in the administration and girls in need in DC, and is encouraging women leaders around the country to do the same where they live. Love that.
