Michelle's Inaugural Gown Won't Make it to the Smithsonian Until Summer...

via HuffPost
If you're dying to see Michelle Obama's Jason Wu gown up-close, you're going to have to wait a little while. The long and involved operation of getting a first lady's inaugural gown to the Smithsonian takes a minimum of six months, the Washington Post reports:

The process begins when Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough writes a letter formally asking the first lady to donate to the historic collection, which has 21 gowns. (Second-term inaugural dresses usually end up in presidential libraries.)

Then museum officials will meet with her and create a mannequin for the gown, then make repairs as necessary. Notice the president stepping on the dress as they danced? Probably a few rips in the hem. The Smithsonian is also trying to get their hands on the Isabel Toledo ensemble Mrs. Obama wore earlier in the day. We're guessing that won't be too difficult.

Black Artists Association Upset Michelle Hasn't Worn Black Designers...

*scroll down for my 2 cents*

via WWD
FIRST LADY UNDER FIRE
Amid all the praise of First Lady Michelle Obama’s fashion choices for the inaugural festivities, the Black Artists Association is taking her to task for not wearing anything by an African American designer. Cofounder Amnau Eele said Wednesday she will make a formal appeal to the First Lady’s office on behalf of the BAA. “It’s fine and good if you want to be all ‘Kumbaya’ and ‘We Are the World’ by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?” Eele said. The BAA leader was a runway model in her own right for Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Bill Blass and others.

Asked if perhaps the First Lady isn’t looking at the world colorlessly, Eele said, “It’s one thing to look at the world without color but she had seven slots to wear designer clothes. Why wasn’t she wearing the clothes of a black designer? That was our moment.”

MY 2 CENTS:
Here's the thing. People who assume that they are "entitled" to something always rub me wrong. Like I tell my god-child, you don't get what you want by whining about it. The sense of entitlement by the BAA is thick in the article above and I just think it's unfortunate. I sincerely believe that Michelle is not picking designers based on their race or gender, I honestly think she's picking what she genuinely likes, and from what I've seen her wear so far, she has very unique and ecclectic taste. The fact that the Black Artists Association felt like the Inauguration of the First African American President was also "their moment" to be showcased and spotlighted as black designers, and on top of all that, gave an outspoken and resentful sounding interview to Women's Wear Daily about it, speaks volumes... and not in a good way. I mean, is it honestly Michelle Obama's job to single handedly launch the careers of Black designers just because she's black? Where is it written that it's Michelle's obligation and duty to do so? The way I look at it is like this, the Obama's will be the First Family for the next 4 years, possibly 8, with hundreds if not thousands of public appearances scheduled. Why not work hard, be persistent, determined, focused, have a little faith and let your work speak for itself?

In the timely words of American essayist and psychologist Og Mandino:
“Each day is a special gift from God, and while life may not always be fair, you must never allow the pains, hurdles, and handicaps of the moment to poison your attitude and plans for yourself and your future. You can never win when you wear the ugly cloak of self-pity, and the sour sound of whining will certainly frighten away any opportunity for success. Never again. There is a better way.”

Coming Soon: First Lady Michelle Obama on the Cover of VOGUE..

via WWD
Speaking of the new administration, it appears Vogue has finally landed First Lady Michelle Obama for a cover — and it could be out in the next few weeks. Thank Obama’s hairdresser for confirming the news: Frédéric Fekkai stylist Johnny Wright this week inked a deal with television production company 44 Blue, which produces reality shows such as Style Network’s “Split Ends.” The news reports on the deal said Wright “has styled the First Lady’s coif for the Democratic National Convention, her upcoming appearance on the cover of Vogue magazine and other occasions.” Really? An e-mail to Wright’s publicist went unreturned. A Vogue spokesman stayed on script about whether Michelle Obama will make a cover appearance, saying simply, “We’re very interested in working with the First Lady.”

Nevertheless, all signs point to go for Mrs. Obama’s cover turn. Photographer Annie Leibovitz, who shoots for many Condé Nast titles, including Vogue and Vanity Fair, was spotted in Washington last week leaving the Hay-Adams Hotel, where the Obamas were staying before their eventual move to the White House. And since the March Vogue’s spring fashion issue, which hits newsstands in mid-February, is one of the thickest of the year, most observers suspect that would be the most likely one to feature the new First Lady (and family). Though it isn’t known which designer Michelle Obama will adorn for the shoot, insiders suspect she may choose some looks off the rack. Being that she’s already expressed her affection for J. Crew — which she wore during the inaugural festivities — and Target, don’t be surprised if she opts for one of those.

Celebrity Fashion Stylists Weigh In on Michelle's Inaugural Ball Gown..

via US Weekly
"Michelle looked incredibly chic. The gown made her look gorgeous. The dress was very Hollywood. You could see Cameron Diaz or Kate Winslet in that gown. It was very Jackie O. It took her to a new level. She is a fashion icon."
--Stylist Philip Bloch

"Michelle's dress was an unexpected modern change for her, which appropriately mirrors the message which won Barrack this presidency!"
--Stylist Marni Senofonte (Mary J. Blige, Cassie, Diddy)

"I think she looked radiant! The color choice was perfect and not too aggressive. The silhouette of the dress was very complimenting and effortless. Overall, she was glowing and looked very confident and comfortable."
--Stylist Mariel Haenn (Rihanna)

"Loved that she wore Jason Wu! I think there is something wonderful about the fact that she chose to showcase under-the-radar talent. Love that she wore white - so classic, timeless, elegant. MUCH better than a bright red or royal blue. Love that she showed off her fantastic arms. Just worried that the VERY full skirt will make it hard for her to dance at ALL 10 balls!"
--"What Not to Wear's" Stacy London

"Michelle Obama's gown was fairytale and dreamlike. It was a lovely nod to the history and traditions of former first ladies but given a more modern spin. What I loved is the accuracy of her choice of designers and catapulting a lesser known designer into an overnight star."
--Stylist Robert Verdi (Eva Longoria Parker)

"Michelle Obama looked absolutely amazing in Jason Wu. She has already proven herself over the past months at striking the perfect mix of fashion and appropriateness; this gown took it to another level.
I am so glad to see Mrs. Obama supporting young American designers; this will be a big boost to the U.S. fashion industry, as the eyes of the world will be focused on her choices. I have met Jason Wu on several occasions, and he is an incredibly sophisticated and talented young designer. I am so happy to see his work featured on such an esteemed level."
--Stylist Lee Harris

"The one-shouldered dress was a confident and bold choice for the First Lady. The cream dress was a mix of old Hollywood glamour with a youthful ease that people of all ages could connect to. Choosing a young fresh designer signifies the change they want to bring to this country. It was perfectly elegant."

--Stylist Tom Soluri (Leighton Meester)

"Wearing white chiffon was a daring choice, but Michelle Obama pulled it off! When she was dancing with the president, they looked like a dream -- and then you remembered it was really a dream come true!"
--Stylist Vincent Boucher (Blake Lively)

"I LOVE that she's instantly made sweet and talented designer Jason Wu a household name."
--Stylist George Kostiopoulis (Freida Pinto)

"Michelle Obama's stunning inaugural dress was reminiscent of the class and elegance Jackie Kennedy displayed while she was First Lady. It gives me hope that style and grace will be front and center in Washington over the next four years."
--Stylist Casey Ashby (Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus)

Michelle Obama Wears Designer Jason Wu to Inaugural Balls...

via Luxist
At the start of December, Jason Wu called it a "long shot" when asked if he would be designing for the inauguration. Looks like the long shot came through. Young designer Jason Wu was the designer of Michelle Obama's white inaugural gown. Like Isabel Toledo who designed inauguration outfit Michelle Obama wore earlier, Jason Wu is an American designer born elsewhere (Isabel Toledo was born in Cuba, Wu was born in Taiwan). Both also attended Parsons in New York. President Obama wore a white bow tie with his tuxedo. Mrs. Obama also wore diamond drop earrings and a diamond cuff bracelet to match the sparkle of the beaded gown. Wu's gowns generally cost between $3,000-$6,000.

Michelle is quite loyal to her favorite designers. Her beautiful gold sheath dress (made from swiss wool lace, backed with netting for warmth and lined in French silk) and matching coat and scarf that she wore on Inauguration Day are by designer Isabel Toledo who she wore before below when she attended a Vogue/Calvin Klein Fundraiser back in 2008.

More Inaugural Dress Submissions for Michelle O. From White House Black Market

These designs are nice too, but at this late date, I'm sure whatever Michelle O. is wearing to the official Inaugural Balls has already been picked out and is sure to be spectacular.

Talk about White House style! Months after Michelle Obama started a fashion craze by wearing a recession-friendly dress from her local White House/Black Market shop in Chicago, the store has turned its Washington D.C. store into an inaugural dress headquarters. White House/Black Market has transformed its Union Station store to include everything a future First Lady would need on the big day.

The store features four sketches of dresses -- all created by the designers at White House/Black Market -- that are inspired by Obama's style. These sketches (pictured) have gone out to Obama for consideration and have been signed with, "From Our White House to Yours..." The sketches were recently designed, and the four resulting one-of-a-kind gowns are now on display in the storefront, which will revert back to its normal look shortly after the inauguration festivities end.

White House/Black Market, partnering with actors Jane Kaczmarek and Bradley Whitford's Clothes Off Our Back Foundation, auctioned off each dress in the hopes they'll be worn during the political festivities. The proceeds of the auction -- bidding ended Thursday night -- went to the charity. This White House/Black Market will also house dozens of dresses and accessories perfect for inauguration parties and events. The displays will showcase Obama's ability to mix designer pieces with more affordable ones.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — When President-elect Barack Obama kicked off his whistle-stop tour in Philadelphia on Saturday, his remarks carried echoes from America's past. References to the nation's founding were fitting, given the city's role in the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Yet Obama dipped into other historical moments as he traveled to Washington for his inauguration.

Tips to Channel Michelle Obama's Classic Style...

via MSNBC
By Bobbie Thomas
TODAYShow.com contributor

Michelle Obama is already poised to set trends in the fashion industry, following in the footsteps of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy as a style icon. While joining her husband on the campaign trail, she created quite a buzz with her polished professional pieces and easygoing off-duty duds. But while it may seem effortless, there’s more to Mrs. Obama’s style than meets the eye.

Bobbie Thomas, TODAY style editor and author of The Buzz column for In Touch Weekly, considers the soon-to-be first lady’s impact on fashion and how every woman can get her look.

What she wears
Color, color and more color. While keeping her appearance sleek and chic, Michelle is also fearless in her fashion choices, often opting for bold hues, powerful prints and eye-catching accents like brooches and belts.

She is sophisticated without feeling stuffy, and polished with an effortless ease. Her tastes vary from high-end designers like Thakoon Panichgul and Narciso Rodriguez to hometown favorites, and even nationwide chains like Gap and J. Crew. From formal and semiformal frocks to suits and casual ensembles, Michelle is the picture-perfect model of modern American fashion every woman can relate to.

Why it works
While her choices have sometimes stirred water-cooler and playground debates alike, Michelle's confidence has certainly helped her carry off her clothing. By adding her own accents, rather than wearing one designer head-to-toe, she’s able to pull looks together that reflect her personality.

She’s also not afraid to flaunt her athletic figure, embracing her body shape by wearing pieces that show off her curves and streamline her silhouette. Furthermore, her mix of high and low price points has often resulted in a winning combination. She proves that you can really find self-expression at every price point.

How to make it your own
Women across America shopped at White House/Black Market after Mrs. Obama wore the label’s $148 dress on “The View,” but you don’t have to snag her exact garments to get her overall look.

Look for classic pieces, but play with color. Identify striking solids that compliment you, and crisp combinations, like black and white, that add a ”pop.” And the key to “classy”? Know when to tone it down with a demure neckline, cardigan or blazer. Mix it up by wearing old and new pieces or splurges and steals at the same time.

And once you find brands and styles that work for you, don’t be afraid to keep going back for more. Mrs. Obama has been seen in countless designs from local Chicago designer Maria Pinto, most likely because she knows Pinto’s clothes work well on her body, and she feels comfortable with the line. Stand by your favorite store, and keep checking in for new items that will suit your needs.

Most importantly though, know your body, and don’t be afraid to select styles that will play up your shape and flatter your figure. It will bring you one step closer to looking like a first lady, rather than a frumpy one!

Michelle Obama's Inaugural Gown to Remain Secret Til Tuesday..

via The Washington Post

In a break with precedent, the designer of Michelle Obama's Inaugural gown will not be disclosed before Inauguration Day, according to a fashion industry insider who requested anonymity.

That will leave fashionistas breathless and will break with years of history. The designer of the First Lady's gown has traditionally been released in advance — with a great deal of hype and excitement.

But not this year.

An aide to Mrs. Obama who asked not to be identified confirmed that "an announcement may not be made until Tuesday." Next Tuesday, Jan. 20, is Inauguration Day.

Seventh Avenue Looking to Michelle Obama to Save Fashion...

Throughout the campaign, First Lady Elect, Michelle Obama has  demonstrated not just that she understood the power of clothes to transmit a message, but a readiness to adjust that message as the need arose.

Michelle Obama was not alone in that; Cindy McCain notably tweaked her image as the campaign ground along, softening her appearance to seem more populist and less like a member of the rules committee at an exclusive country club.

Yet Mrs. Obama did something bolder on the campaign trail and, in a sense, less expected. With flashcard clarity, she signaled an interest both in looking stylish and also in advancing the cause of American fashion and those who design and make it. She wore off-the-rack stuff from J. Crew and, at times controversially, designs by fashion darlings like Isabel Toledo, Thakoon Panichgul and Narciso Rodriguez. She brought to the campaign a sophisticated approach to high-low dressing, a determination to adapt designers’ work to suit herself — adding jewelry or sweaters or wearing flat shoes with sheaths or even altering dressmaking details — as well as a forthright conviction that it is the woman who should wear the clothes and not the other way around.
