DVF, Thakoon Both Submitting Inaugural Ball Designs for Michelle Obama...

Michelle Obama ♥'s Thakoon. Above, wearing the designer twice.

Both Diane von Furstenberg and Thakoon Panichgul have submitted designs to Michelle Obama for the Inaugural Ball according to Mrs-O.org:

Though surely Mrs. O’s dress for the Inaugural Ball will remain a secret until its debut, we can at least begin to pull together an informed short list.  Per NY Mag, both Diane von Furstenberg and Thakoon have submitted designs. Though Thakoon didn’t exactly confirm, we can read between the lines with great delight.  Last night at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award dinner Diane Von Furstenberg told us she has submitted sketches for Michelle Obama’s inaugural ball gown. “Well, they asked me to.” she said. Thakoon Panichgul, one of Michelle’s favorite designers, tried to remain elusive when we asked if he’d submitted sketches. “Um … we’ll see what happens,” he said with a devilish smirk.

The Meaning of Michelle: From Newsweek...

Michelle Obama will grace the cover of Newsweek's December 1st issue (on newstands Nov. 24th). She will be featured in an article by Allison Samuels entitled "What Michelle Means to Us.." An excerpt below:

Michelle Obama challenges the typical stereotype of African-American women, including what is beautiful. Often, the standard of beauty for black women has meant fair skin, and dainty facial features, a limited scope that has had a profound effect on the self-esteem of many African-American women. Michelle Obama puts a new face on the standard of beauty. "Michelle is not only African-American, but brown. Real brown," Samuels writes. "In an era where beauty is often defined on television, in magazines and in movies as fair or white skin, long straight hair and keen features, Michelle looks nothing like the supermodels who rule the catwalks or the porcelain-faced actresses who hawk must-have cosmetics. Yet now she's going to grace the March cover of Vogue magazine -- the ultimate affirmation of beauty."

Michelle Obama Would Look Fierce In...

Isaac Mizrahi

I think Michelle could pull off any of these 5 looks from Isaac's Spring 2009 collection.  If I were on her wardrobe team, I'd have these 5 looks pulled immediately as styling options for Michelle's various spring appearances.

Michelle Obama Wears H&M!

Ok, as if more proof was needed that First-Lady Elect Michelle Obama is an "everywoman", the fact that she shops and wears anything from H&M, not to mention this $34.95 dress from one of my favorite stores ever, speaks volumes.

And sidebar for a moment, but isn't it the tackiest thing in the world when you're around people who are always telling you about all the "designer" this and that that they own, and that they "only" wear "Louis Vuitton, Gucci, & Versace?" You're almost waiting to hear them tell you that their skin is made of actual 14 karat gold.  Tacky, tacky. Don't be like that. Seriously, its not a good look. Trust.

So the fact that Michelle chooses to wear what looks great on her, no matter if it came off the rack from White House Black Market, J. Crew, H&M or pulled from the showrooms of fabulous New York designers, just goes to show that Michelle Obama is... freakinawesome.

Michelle Obama "Style Guide" Set For a Spring Release..

Michelle Obama in Moschino (above)

The incoming first lady is getting her own fashion book. According to Page Six over at the New York Post, Avon has signed former Mademoiselle editor Mandi Norwood to pen a "Michelle Obama Style Guide," due out next spring. Avon vice president Carrie Feron said: "Not since Jackie O have we had a first lady become a fashion icon. Michelle Obama will be one of history's most vibrant first ladies; she has a distinctive style that every American woman can aspire to, whether the consumer is a Target shopper or some one more likely to be found on the Miracle Mile."

Michelle Obama's Fabulous Arms...

One thing that the Obama's refuse to skimp on is fitness.  Barack says he works out 6 days a week for 45 minutes–no matter what’s going on. With his busy schedule, he has to either give up sleep or working out, and he says he's not giving up on his workouts. Michelle wakes up at 4:30 a.m. for a 90 minute workout 3 days a week. And it shows.  I ♥ her fabulous arms!  They're strong and toned, long and lean, like a dancer's arms.  And she has the perfect shoulders for halter tops too.  Nice.

Who Will Dress The Obama's for the Inaugural Ball?

What a monumental undertaking and a huge honor this would be for whomever is chosen.  Signing on to dress the first lady for the Inauguration Ball is always a big deal, but this year, “it’s every designer’s dream to dress Michelle Obama,” says New York designer Marc Bouwer. PEOPLE asked Marc Bouwer and designers Reem Acra and Isabel Toledo to come up with sketches of how they’d dress the First-Family-elect, given the honor.  See their design ideas below:

Michelle Obama: Realistic Fashion Icon...

By Heather Wood RudĂșlph
Michelle Obama is a realistic fashion icon. Jackie Kennedy employed a personal designer. Nancy Reagan wore only custom-tailored suits. Michelle Obama shops the J. Crew catalogue. Her wardrobe of sheath dresses, twin sets, kitten heels, and minimal jewelry ranges from the everyday affordable (Gap, H&M) to the mid-range luxury (Narciso Rodriguez, Maria Pinto), making it totally accessible to the modern American woman. And it's not just what she wears, but how she wears it. Obama is hardly Jackie O-thin, but she confidently flaunts her real-woman curves in silhouettes that are both sexy and sophisticated, proving that femininity can also be feminist. And she's never been spotted in a pair of stuffy, uncomfortable pantyhose. Here's hoping she'll be the one to kill that archaic trend once and for all. (agreed, agreed, agreed! -Chanel ;-)

NYC Style Makers Recognize Michelle Obama's Fashion Sense...

Barack Obama may have captured the election, but Michelle Obama has captured the imagination of some of America’s top designers and taste-makers, who spoke with PEOPLE about their sartorial take on the First-Lady-elect. “People keep likening her to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis,” celeb-stylist Robert Verdi, who dresses the likes of Eva Longoria Parker. “The similarity is that they are both very contemporary in their fashion sense. Women will really find new inspiration in her.” Calvin Klein’s creative director Francisco Costa also gets the Kennedy vibe from Obama. “Michelle Obama is so grounded. She’s a very beautiful woman, very stylish. It really feels like the time of the Kennedys — the family, the kids, are so beautiful.” American designer Zac Posen notes that Michelle Obama’s promotion of U.S. labels will be a plus for the country’s fashion industry, while Rachel Roy, simply loves that Michelle wears what she believes in. “I think it is the representation of the change that her husband is also bringing,” says Roy. “She loves fashion. But it’s fashion second and her life and her business and her kids first.”

I Can See Michelle Obama In...

Michael Kors

Since Michelle obviously has an affinity for floral prints and American designers, this fitted and feminine Michael Kors frock from his Fall 2008 collection would make a bold, ladylike statement and it would look great on her curves.

Michelle Obama's Red Dress (1st White House Visit) Revealed...

After opting for a controversial black and red number by New York designer Narciso Rodriguez on Election Night, Michelle Obama visited the White House today in a conservative red dress by Maria Pinto, a Chicago favorite and creator of the blue dress Ms. Obama wore at the Democratic National Convention and the purple sheath she wore the night her husband claimed the Democratic nomination.

The piece was a style that designer Chicago designer Maria Pinto had said she hoped Mrs. Obama would wear on election night. “I love her in clean colors, striking shapes,” Ms. Pinto had said. Mrs. Obama, who has been wearing Ms. Pinto for about five years, bought the dress, which retails for about $750, sometime during the summer, Ms. Pinto says.

Mrs. Obama, who received a tour of the first family’s living quarters from Laura Bush during the visit, is likely to see her wardrobe even more closely scrutinized once she assumes her formal duties as First Lady.

Michelle Obama's Style Emerges...

Comparisons of Michelle Obama to Jacqueline Kennedy have centered on style and fashion. Watch for Michelle Obama (in a belted green Moschino above) to become a trendsetter, possibly a reluctant one. -Darlene Superville

First Lady-Elect Michelle Obama has been both praised and maligned for her style choices. She takes risks. She enjoys trendy American designers as well as more classic looks. She buys online and off the rack, but she's also courted by top designers. So just when you think you know what Michelle Obama is gonna wear, she surprises you, and I think that's gonna make her super interesting to watch. I don't think we're going to be able to box her into one fashion mold, because as soon as we try, she's gonna break out of it and do something totally different. I, of course, have my own style ideas for her, but I'm actually looking forward to seeing what she does next.

Michelle on the Cover of VOGUE?

Could we see Michelle Obama on the cover of Vogue soon after the inauguration of her husband, President-elect Barack Obama? The next first lady appeared on a slew of magazine covers as the presidential race entered its last months. But Vogue has been campaigning for a Michelle Obama cover since last September — both in print and in person. Editor in chief Anna Wintour and contributing editor AndrĂ© Leon Talley hosted several fund-raisers for the Obamas last summer, rallying the fashion community’s support for the Illinois senator. The magazine profiled Michelle Obama in its September issue and featured her as an “It” girl in the April one. Obama campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett was profiled in October. Vogue even spread its affections to the Democratic vice presidential candidate — the magazine photographed in November four generations of Biden women, including Vice President-elect Joe Biden’s wife, Jill. (Vogue showed some love to the Republican ladies, too. Cindy McCain was profiled in the May issue and Roberta McCain was featured in the August Age issue.)

“Starting with Eleanor Roosevelt, it’s been a long-standing tradition to photograph the new first lady. So needless to say, we are very interested in working with Mrs. Obama. Precisely how is still being discussed,” said a Vogue spokesman. If Obama does land the cover, she’ll be only the second first lady to do so in Vogue’s 116-year history; Hillary Rodham Clinton appeared on the December 1998 issue.

Despite Vogue’s best efforts, Ebony might get to the Obamas beforehand — the Chicago-based title is quickly assembling a special January issue dedicated to Barack Obama’s candidacy. The issue will be a reflection of Ebony’s coverage of the campaign and the First Family over the past 18 months, but the magazine is extending the close on the issue in hopes of getting a last-minute interview with the President-elect and his family before closing. Essence is also said to be working on a special package for its January issue, but details have not been hammered out

Michelle Obama's Red & Black Election Dress Revealed..

I have to be honest about First Lady-Elect Michelle Obama's designer Narciso Rodriguez dress (Spring 2009) last night. I didn't like it. The whole look of this dress had me confused.

Now if she was partial to wearing Narciso Rodriguez last night with the obvious red and black theme that the First Family-Elect was going for, I would have gone with the chic and modern black, slightly off the shoulder number from the same Rodriguez Spring '09 collection (below) and added a few chic red accessories (shoes, necklace or belt). With Michelle's height and stature, she would have rocked it.

See a few looks from the Narciso Rodriguez Pre-Fall (2009) line here.

Michelle Obama Interview on The Tonight Show..

Meet Michelle Obama Dress Designer, Maria Pinto..

Though she is not Mrs. Obama's exclusive dressmaker, Ms. Pinto, a designer known for luxuriant evening wear, is a favorite of Mrs. Obama, who wore buzzed-about Pinto creations when her husband announced his candidacy and on the night of the notorious fist-bump before his speech claiming the Democratic nomination, among other occasions.
....She met Mrs. Obama a few years ago through a friend. "Michelle came in just like everyone else and said: 'I need a few dresses. I need a suit for work,' " Ms. Pinto said.

As Mrs. Obama’s fashion presence has risen, so has that of Ms. Pinto, a former Geoffrey Beene assistant. After 16 years in the business, she opened her first boutique Tuesday night in the arty West Loop, near downtown Chicago. Was the timing fortuitous?

Ms. Pinto said the shop was in the works for at least a year. “We’re not Balenciaga, we’re not Gucci,” she said, “so it’s great that there are women that are free thinkers that come to us and help us establish the brand.” [Source, Source]

Michelle Obama's Dress From "The View"...

Michelle Obama is really making a name for herself in the style department. Women are already clamoring to get their hands on the dress she wore when she co-hosted "The View" on 6/18/08 which is currently SOLD OUT in stores. The dress will be available again in August:

Like Jacqueline Kennedy a generation ago, Michelle Obama is causing a fashion sensation even before the election.

But this time it’s a metaphorical fashion statement made by her choice of a $148 black and white print dress carrying a label called White House/Black Market to wear on the popular TV show, “The View.”

The search is on among would-be fashionistas as well as savvy statement-makers for the sleeveless black and white tank dress that Michelle Obama wore onABC’s “The View” this week. Purchased from a retailer called “White House/Black Market,” the very affordable $148 dress has unleashed a mad scramble on both the store and the website of Donna Ricco, the NYC-based designer of the dress. According to The New York Daily News, thousands of orders for the frock have poured into both.

The White House/Black Market website this morning features what they’re calling their “Road to the White House” dress on their homepage. One hundred percent cotton, wash ‘n wear. Sold out, but available in mid-August.

Yes, we know Michelle Obama is a full-fledged, Harvard-educated Woman of Substance. But now we also know she can use fashion in a way that disarms, makes subtle statements and even shows off upper arms to die for.

White House/Black Market? It just says it all.

Michelle Obama's Bio...

MICHELLE ROBINSON OBAMA - THE EARLY YEARS
via Squidoo.com
Born on January 17, 1964, Michelle Robinson was raised in a one-bedroom apartment on Chicago's South Shore.

Of note is that she shared a "bedroom" with her brother, but it wasn't much of a bedroom. It was actually the living room with a divider down the middle. Michelle's father died in 1990 two years before she married Barack, but her mother is still alive and living in the same one-bedroom apartment, protected by a burglar-proof wrought-iron door and secured windows.

After high school Michelle Robinson majored in sociology at Princeton University, graduating with cum laude honors in 1985. From there she attended Harvard where she earned her law degree in 1988, one year ahead of her husband-to-be, Barack, whom she hadn't met yet but attended the same law school.

MICHELLE AND BARACK MEET
After graduating from Harvard, Michelle accepted a position at a downtown Chicago law firm. In 1989 she was asked to mentor a summer associate from Harvard name Barack Obama. According to reports, Barack didn't have much interest in corporate law, but did have a lot of interest in Michelle.

Apparently Michelle Robinson initially brushed off advances from Barack because they were working at same firm...and he was an intern and she higher up the law firm's foodchain as an associate. But love prevailed and they were married on October 18, 1992.

Interestingly Barack and Michelle waited almost seven years before having children. Their first daughter name Malia Ann Obama was born in 1999 with Natasha (often called "sasha") following two years later in 2001.

When asked about what made her fall in love with him she replied "for the same reason many other people respect him; his connection with people."

Even though her husband is the center of attention, Michelle has zero concerns about fidelity in their marriage. She told Ebony magazine in March 2006, "I never worry about things I can't affect, and with fidelity . . . that is between Barack and me, and if somebody can come between us, we didn't have much to begin with."

MICHELLE'S ROBINSON OBAMA'S CAREER
Michelle's impressive resume includes: Former associate dean at the University of Chicago; a member of six boards of directors including the prestigious Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and Tree House Foods; and Vice President, Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals. In this position she was responsible for all programs and initiatives that involve the relationships between the hospitals and the community as well as management of the hospitals' business diversity program.

MICHELLE OBAMA'S INFLUENCES ON BARACK'S POLITICAL CAREER
Michelle's professional relationships were helpful when her husband in 2004, then a state senator, ran for the United States Senate, where he faced a primary dominated by some of the Democratic Party's most powerful political families.

In this 2004 race, Obama had the support of influential black business leaders, some of whom had closer ties to his wife than they did to him. According to Newsweek, a former boss of Michelle Obama's, a powerful black woman Valerie Jarrett, chair of the Chicago Stock Exchange, served as finance chair of Barack Obama's U.S. Senate campaign.

MICHELLE OBAMA: THE MOM & WIFE
After Barack was elected to the U.S. Senate, Barack and Michelle choose to keep their children in Chicago, where Michelle continued her career as well. "We made a good decision to stay in Chicago so that has kept our family stable," Michelle Obama told the Chicago Tribune. Every Sunday the family attends services at the Trinity United Church of Christ.

According to reports, Michelle has mastered being a mother, career woman and the wife of a politician. When Newsweek magazine trailed her in 2004, the reporter could not help but notice a to-do list for her two daughters Malia and Natasha that included time for "play." She is in bed most nights by 9:30 and rises each morning at 4:30 to run on a treadmill. This level of discipline and organization helps her manage her public and private pressures with poise. In New Yorker magazine Michelle noted that the life of a political wife is "hard and that's why Barack is such a grateful man."

But there's more to it. "Barack didn't pledge riches" Michelle explains to Newsweek. "Only a life that would be interesting. On that promise he's delivered."
